Inclusive social development and Tobias

written by Asta Jakobs for Tobias School of Art & Therapy

Tobias School of Art & Therapy is pleased to be part of the Section for Inclusive Social Development at the Goetheanum, joining individuals and initiatives dedicated to supporting people from all walks of life, with a deep respect for inner development as the foundation for outer social change.

Inclusive social development supports environments where everyone, regardless of ability, background or identity, can blossom, realise their potential and contribute meaningfully. The aim is both to integrate individuals and also to transform systems in removing barriers, fostering dignity and promoting participation, belonging and social cohesion – all key elements for sustainable development and social justice.

Anthroposophy, developed by Rudolf Steiner, has long supported these ideals through practical initiatives. The threefold social order (cultural-spiritual, legal-political, economic life) promotes fairness and equanimity. Waldorf education nurtures individualised learning, inclusion and ethical development.
Camphill communities and curative education create inclusive spaces for people with disabilities, recognising the spiritual dignity and unique gifts of every person.

Tobias School of Art & Therapy offers an inclusive higher education sharing this vision by shaping learning environments where students with diverse backgounds and experiences, can participate fully and feel valued. It addresses barriers of disability, language, ethnicity, gender, religion and background by offering diverse curricula, respectful dialogue, mentoring, support and appropriate facilities. By uplifting student voices, nurturing a transpersonal approach, fostering inclusive leadership and ongoing assessment, education becomes a force for building fairer, more resilient societies. The aim is to enhance individual strengths and character that enrich the whole community. Our students come from many parts of the world where their rich work continues to strengthen communities after their studies at Tobias.
